"The Dresden Files" canceled

I hadn't held much hope anyway, so it's not like it's a surprise, but it's still a crushing disappointment:

"The Dresden Files" has been canceled after a meager 12 episodes (see this and this).

No second season for us. No more Harry/Bob interaction. No more huffy ghost and no more overburdened police consultant/wizard/P.I. brainstorming about how to best solve a supernatural case.

No episode in which Murphy finally meets Bob and is introduced to Harry's world. No canon explanation as to how Bob might be released from his eternal punishment. No more hints as to Harry's childhood and his mother's past. No episode in which Harry encounters Anna, Murphy's daughter.

I was torn about the idea of another season. As "Stargate: Atlantis" proved, sometimes it's best if a show is cancelled before its creators have the chance to screw up and transform it (and its characters) into something the early fans can't help but be disgusted with. I had nightmares about "The Dresden Files" putting more and more emphasis on the Harry-Murphy relationship. I was afraid the Harry/Bob interaction might become a repeat of their snappy, hurtful conversation in episode 1x07 - "Walls".

But I held onto hope. I was willing to entertain the idea of another season, all the while hoping for the best. I'm not an optimist by nature.

The TV canon is closed now. Despite that, [livejournal.com profile] skull_boy_love and [livejournal.com profile] dresdenfic are very active, and promised to remain so. Still, more and more fans will wander off to greener pastures. A fandom with only one season under its belt won't live for very long. The pull exerted by, say, "The Sentinel" or "The Professionals" lay a) in the fact that they came along long before slash became mainstream and slashers became hummingbirds flitting from one bright flower to the next in the time it takes one to change one's underwear, and b) these two shows each had 4, resp. 5, seasons to dazzle their fans with.

As for "The Dresden Files"? The fandom will slowly wither and die.

And I, for one, am deeply unhappy about that.

I want my DVDs. And SciFi's TPTBs' heads on a pike. Damnit all to hell.

As for the banner, it's pointless now. Still, I can't resist:
