Starting point: zero

... well, that's at least what it feels like at work these days. My new boss is on vacation, and I'm reduced to what I tried to forget about my training period seven years ago (Dear God, it's already been so long?!) -- keeping myself occupied by reading files. Although now, it's not so bad; I don't feel like somone parked me in a dusty corner and tried his best to ignore my existence. Telling enough, isn't it, when the novices' room is called "death-room"? No. I read. I learn. I get wise and omniscent. Or so. <g>

No, really, the files are kind of interesting. Reading about house searches, cooperation between authorities from here and, say, Slovakia, disappearing lorries, smuggled goods, the like. And I was told one can get sent abroad on a very short notice to participate in another nation's investigations. Oh yeah? I still feel like the dumbest kid in town; hope that'll change in some months. Evidently, the new section chief is testing me -- he asked me to find a... <sob>... file for him. He wants it on his desk tomorrow morning, and I already had to ask for help. Great. Dug through piles of file folders and didn't find the relevant one. It's like easter-egg hunt, I suppose.

Oh, whatever. The head of the office, though, had finally time for the short obligatory
"greet-and-hello-and-hope-you'll-get-used-to-your-work-here" conversation and seemed very ok. He asked me about my expectations and how come I'd moved so far up north? When I told him that, originally, I had applied for several posts in the customs/police cooperation unit in W. (which is about half the distance to my former home town), he mentioned that it might still be possible for me to get transferred to there!!! I could barely contain my joy, 'cause that's what I've always wanted to do. Not recover money for the finance office, but make this world a safer place. Sappy and overly-idealistic notions, I know, but -- I seem to be an idealist. I don't just want to shuffle paper from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. I want to change something. And in about a month's time, I can ask him again. I lack experience in the investigations sector, but...but...I...I'll keep my fingers crossed. And hope.

And my homepage update is almost ready for uploading, too. I'm still overwhelmed and happy when the authors I asked whether I could recommend their stories on my site react enthusiastically and say, yes, girl, no problem, go along! I love this solidarity in the slash community; even my brother's Christians can't keep up with this. Then, [livejournal.com profile] mabiana who ordered the "Oz" T-Shirt from me from the US, N. who records the fifth season for me right now, L. who copied Seasons 1 to 4.1 for me, and [livejournal.com profile] mareen whose pile of video CDs I'll have to give back this weekend. What would RayK say? "This is greatness?"

Yeah, I guess so. <g>
