The following ficlet is but a short snippet with emphasis not on the content, but rather on the writing exercise of fulfilling the requirements of the "ABC" challenge on the [serge] Mailing List. It shows.

Silent Hopes and Dreams
Author: allaire mikháil
Fandom: due South
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski
Rating: PG-13
Summary: During a boring day at the 27th, Ray keeps daydreaming...
Beta thanks to: [livejournal.com profile] lmondegreen
502 words, challenge response, RayK POV.

The following story has been sleeping in my desk drawer for quite some time now. I wrote it back in - what was it? 1994? when I first discovered K/S slash in zine format. It never got finished, and it never got translated into English. Still, I like it enough that I believe it deserves to be read, even if it's only the first part of a longer storyline:

Der Weg in der Dunkelheit - #1: Opfer und Opfer
Author: allaire mikháil
Fandom: Star Trek: The Original Series
Pairing: James T. Kirk / Spock
Rating: NC-17 (for adult themes)
Summary: Als sein bester Freund aus romulanischer Gefangenschaft zurückkehrt, versucht Spock verzweifelt, die mentalen und emotionalen Wunden von James T. Kirk zu heilen. Aber Jim tut etwas Unverzeihliches...
2.299 words, drama, Kirk POV.

How to get Kirk and Spock into bed together in a believable way? With Spock still being all Vulcan about it?

I believe the style works extremely well - another reason why translating this story into English never progressed very far.

Back in the summer of 2000, when I was deep into The Sentinel, I experienced a rare thing - inspiration. And not just for a ficlet, no, for a true story. Instead of packing my bags for my vacation in Greece, I stubbornly clung to my parents' computer and wrote down the following story in a daze:

Ripples in the Dirac Sea (or: The infinite Amount of Colors between Black and White)
Author: allaire mikháil
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim Ellison / Blair Sandburg
Rating: R
Summary: Life offers us many crossroads to choose from, and, no matter how we decide each time, we'll have to live with the consequences...
Beta thanks to: MoonShadow
9.319 words, drama, 3rd person POV.

The inspiration came from two short stories I'd found quite some time ago in a science fiction collection of my father's. Decisions. Crossroads. What if. The most interesting thought experiment ever.

edit: The quotes from both short stories, Geoffrey A. Landis' "Ripples in the Dirac Sea" and George Alec Effinger's "Schrödinger's Kitten", have now been taken directly from the original texts instead of been incorrectly translated.

Another exercise in pointlessness. My oldest finished "fanfic", although not the first I ever posted:

Surprise!
Author: allaire mikháil
Fandom: Highlander: The Series
Pairing: none (gen)
Rating: G
Summary: Just a little gathering of friends for a certain birthday party... with a single thing going not as planned.
Beta thanks to: [livejournal.com profile] natlet
1.318 words, humor, 3rd person POV.

If it helps, I believe I've since grown as a writer.

On the topic of Babylon 5 and my fondness for the Sinclair/Garibaldi pairing - back in 2001, the [sinclair] Mailing List (today @ Yahoo! groups) was very active, and aside from participating in a (later sadly stalled) round-robin, I also posted various ficlets:

Glimpses from a Data Crystal, Frozen in Time - #1: Orders

I loved this period of my life, and I loved the interaction with the listsibs.

Babylon 5 fic: "Really Sleeping in Light"

Babylon 5 was the first online fandom I ever fell head over heels for - as a writer, not a reader/lurker. [livejournal.com profile] natlet virtually held my hand during the mad rush of writing my version of a fix-it for the Sinclair/Garibaldi pairing. This story really helped bring me into fandom as a whole.

Really Sleeping in Light
Author: allaire mikháil
Fandom: Babylon 5
Pairing: Jeffrey Sinclair / Michael Garibaldi
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Set after Emily Brunson's "The House of Flesh", this story creates an alternate universe in which Michael Garibaldi decides to join his lover, Jeffrey Sinclair, on Minbar - a thousand years in the past.
Beta thanks to: [livejournal.com profile] natlet
18.595 words, Garibaldi POV, AU/drama/novel.

It's one of my earliest works and as such, I might have written it differently today. I tried to emulate Em's style (at least in certain paragraphs), but I'm not sure how well I succeeded. It's certainly the longest piece of fiction I've yet written, and dammit, it certainly was a labor of love. That story consumed my life, and I will always love it.

Crossover fic: "All Lovers in the Night"

  • Feb. 1st, 2002 at 6:00 PM
allaire: (Default)
This was the first story that I ever posted, and it's still (or rather: again) up on The Wonderful World of Make-Believe:

All Lovers in the Night
Author: allaire mikháil
Fandoms: various
Pairings: various m/m and m/f pairings
Rating: PG-13
Summary: It's really just love in the night...
Beta thanks to: Peja
3.779 words, various POVs.

This story is a crossover between far too many fandoms ("Profiler", "F/X", "Highlander: The Series", "U.F.O.", "Babylon 5", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Star Trek: The Original Series", the "Batman" comics, "Sports Night", "The Sentinel" & "Prey", to be precise) and not something I'm horribly proud of. You could almost call it a songfic, although I ought to stress that the song's only the prologue; the characters don't sing it to each other. *g* It's smoop. It's self-indulgent. Still, I don't exactly hate it. Whatever.
