Oh, by the way, I'd have almost ended up as a translator for the next weeks. The department here responsible for translating texts from/into English is seriously overworked (not enough personnel since the whole bureau is undergoing restructuring to reinforcing the counter-terrorism unit). Unfortunately, my boss said 'no' on my behalf while I was still on vacation; he wants me to get used to the regular work here. Argh. I'd have preferred the translation thing; would have been fun!

*sigh*

As someone who has had to do translations. Believe me, it's no fun. Writing/speaking English is not the same as suddenly having to translate stuff and not only get the meaning across but maybe even word-for-word translation. Even worse when you have to deal with special terminology.
So be glad your boss said 'no'. I would have kissed my former boss if he'd said no on occasion. I still mix up current and power .

Well, I'd have surely needed to take my dictionary in two volumes to work, but then, when I write to other countries' IP offices, I also don't have much choice in the wording, considering that I have to bring the case across as I've been presented with it... Oh heck, it wouldn't have been ideal, but still, I wonder -- at least, it would have been different. ;-)

Btw, Gwen, I did get my wish last Thursday! <g>

My reputation seems to precede me -- a colleague came into my office and asked me whether I could translate a 5-page letter from Australia for her. It took me two hours, and, incredibly, even the boring lecture about the German stock market proved to have had its uses! Otherwise I wouldn't have understood some of the particulars referred to in the letter!
