Mel Keegan

Am I understanding this correctly? Is Mel Keegan ([livejournal.com profile] melkeegan) (website), the author of "Death's Head", "Equinox", and "Storm Tide", actually Kathy Keegan, she of The Professionals fanfic fame?

We've spent quite a lot of time on trying to pin down Mel Keegan's style and linking it to a specific fanfic author - or even a specific fandom at all. Is it that easy? Mel?

(Most likely everyone already knows the answer to this question, and is shaking their heads at me right now. Whatever.)

I don't know Kathy Keegan, so I can't speak to that part of it, but Mareen told me a long time ago that Mel Keegan used to be a Pros fanfic writer, so who knows? Not me.

(and I'll use my Bodie icon, because I love it and him)

The book covers are kind of a big hint, aren't they? They look like an amalgam between a lot of fannish slashable characters.

I never was certain from what fandom Mel Keegan exactly came from, but this? I did some research on The Professionals fanfic yesterday, and the site and its statement left me a bit flabbergasted.

And I totally get your Bodielove! Now, Doyle's not so much with the "exotic" and more with the "strange looking", but Bodie... *g*

I knew Mel Keegan was a The Professionals fanfic writer, so it could be her. Or it could be some other pseud, but if they are linking it like that...

Hi Allaire - just wandering around on your LJ and found this. Mel Keegan was certainly in Professionals fandom at one time but I understand that "she" is actually a gestalt of two or more people - possibly four or five originally - based in Australia. "Her" first two books were definitely adapted from early Professionals fan-fiction with the numbers filed off, but I have no idea about any of "her" more recent stuff; indeed I didn't realise "she" was still writing.

Thinking of friending you if that's okay? I'm not sure why I haven't got round to it before, except that we don't have a huge number of fandoms in common. Let's see how it goes, anyway!

Hi Fiona,

would you believe it's taken me at least 5 minutes to figure out who you are? I can only blame it on the fact that I haven't even had my first cup of black tea yet (without which I am apparently a zombie mentally) and that half my brain seems to be absent due to being focused on a problem at work. *g*

Thanks for commenting on this - I've always found it very... interesting... that "Mel"'s entire website refuses to give any hint as to "Mel"'s gender (and apparently, to the number of individuals using that handle). We all rather doubted from the beginning that "Mel" was a gay man and suspected "her" of being a fanfic author, but that "she" wasn't even a person, but rather... well, that I didn't expect.

"Her" first two books were definitely adapted from early Professionals fan-fiction with the numbers filed off

Love that turn of phrase! So true. The worst, however, is the cover art of the re-issues of "her" books. Whoever the artist is (are?), you can definitely recognize some facial features of Benton Fraser, Jack O'Neill and a variety of others in the faces of "her" main characters. Not very original, is it?

Also, "Mel"'s lj, [livejournal.com profile] melkeegan, has been deleted.

Of course friending me is more than okay. I'm going to friend you back as soon as I'm back at my computer, which might take me until Tuesday or some such.

As for fandoms in common, are you currently writing on something new?

allaire :-)

I'm back!
Sorry, I was offline for a week - technical issues - and now I'm running to catch up.

I'm writing all sorts of odd things; had a very long 'dry spell' and just getting through it now, with two potential stories in the pipeline based on movies. It's slightly too early to talk about them at the moment as I don't want to jinx anything but I'll keep you informed. If it helps, I recently joined several 'Blades of Glory' slash groups ...

Apologies for not giving you enough of a clue about my 'secret identity', too. I always think I'm about as obvious as an elephant in the room (as well as much the same size) and forget that people may not always make the connection!
