Rare, but true - I actually found it funny and laughed during a comedy - mark it in the calendar!
"Saving Grace" is - how did IMDB put it? - about "a small-town English widow, facing financial troubles after her husband's suicide, [turning] to agriculture of an illegal kind." In short, Grace Trevethyn, with the help of her stoner gardener Matthew and his stoner friends, grows pot. The hilarious part is Grace and Matthew attempting to hide their 'enterprise' while the whole village is already aware of what is going on (even though some marijuana gets mistaken for tea leaves).
Most of all, though, I laughed about Dr. Martin Bamford (who later got his own spin-off movie, "Doc Martin") and his friend, fisherman Harvey, who were the aforementioned 'stoner friends'.
This 'Doctor Martin', the character the later series' character was based on and expanded from, is a very different person... and yet, not so different at all. Both characters are played by the same actor, Martin Clunes, but while the movie doctor came to Cornwall in order to forget about his marital problems and his cheating wife, the series doctor fled London after suddenly developing a phobia against blood (not a good thing for a successful surgeon). The movie doctor is affable and laid-back (and apparently the greatest stoner in the whole village), whereas the series doctor is resolute and blunt to the point of offense (unfortunately to everyone, and not just his patients).
I like misanthropic Dr. Martin Ellingham.
But, somehow, Dr. Martin Bamford is likable, too.
Perhaps it's Martin Clunes? I have no idea. I just know that, one of these days, I have to find the third "Doc Martin" movie somewhere, "Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie.
