allaire: (gaypic)
I think I just added fuel to the flames of a recent flame-war at [Gibbs_And_DiNozzo].

The cause for said flame-war were the following two posts:
"OK, I can let the writter what they want. But I would just like a good Gibbs and Tony story to read."
and
"I'm not telling anyone what to write, I'm just saying what I like to read and taht just happens to be Gibbs and Tony stories."
Both were written by a rather vocabulary-challenged (now former) list-member - let's call her 'M.' -, and immediately resulted in another list-member taking up arms in the 'slighted' author's name.

Of course, the defender's reaction was intended to go to the author's private e-mail account, but somehow (gremlins?) it ended up being posted to the list for everyone to read.
"I swear it's about dang time someone told M. off (politely or impolitely at this point I don't really care which). She doesn't seem to want to get the idea that what she's gives is not comments or reviews but digs & demands & mostly everyone just lets her be saying 'well that's just M.'. I swear to pete I've had enough of M. & her digs at whatever writer doesn't write what SHE wants.

The stories are PLAINLY labeled so why in the world doesn't she just read the Gibbs/DiNozzo stuff that's out there instead of being a whiny & demanding BRAT! Trust me, SHE is definitely the reason why I don't post what I write on many lists or any that she's on."

Instead of demanding an apology, several other list-members took the opportunity to bash the dissident, and were rather hurtful and malicious about it. The listmom joined in and took the easy way out to resolve the conflict - she banned the first party. Problem solved, right?

I found myself literally shaking with rage and absolutely had to comment.
"Hi guys,

when I opened my daily digest e-mails today, I was very surprised at the most recent posts to this list.

Unexpected, but true, I found myself sympathizing with M.

Everybody can make a mistake and send personal e-mail to a mailing list. But if that e-mail happens to be aggressive and a personal dig at a list-member, I think an apology is the least thing to expect. You have the right to trash-talk anyone behind their back (and hope they never find out), but if you make such a (not so accidental?) mistake, you'd better eat humble pie afterwards.

Instead, other list-members took the opportunity to jump onto the bandwagon and join in with the hurtful crowd.

What kind of a list atmosphere is this?!

Furthermore, I have been very, VERY annoyed - not at M. and her (admittedly vocabulary-challenged) posts, but rather at certain authors "spamming" this list with OT stuff.

May I remind you all that according to the group description, [Gibbs_And_DiNozzo] is about Gibbs/DiNozzo slash *only*?
"Jethro Gibbs, Tony DiNozzo...if this is the NCIS OTP with you this is the place to come play. All stories must include Gibbs and DiNozzo, but other pairings can be used as secondaries."
I joined this list because I'm a huge fan of my (one and only) OTP pairing, and getting my inbox crammed full with off-topic posts regarding pairings that either aren't even slash or else pair Gibbs off with all and sundry across fandoms I don't give a fig about isn't why I came here. At all. Otherwise, I'd read every post at [livejournal.com profile] ncis_slash.

So please, P., either change the group description to make it more open towards other pairings, or else, everybody, why don't you just just go on 'special notices only' here and use Yahoo!groups to create a new NCIS-centric list that allows for slashing other characters than Gibbs and DiNozzo?

Pretty please?

An active and talking group is a miracle in itself; which is exactly the reason why I haven't said anything until today. But bashing M. for daring to criticize this exact same thing? Makes this seem like a high school clique that forces out dissidents.

Which reminds me - P., why did you ban M.? *She* didn't attack anyone personally; she was even rather polite. The thong of people immediately jumping her and beating her up verbally? Not so much.

Shame on you all.

allaire mikháil,
disappointed

P.S.: Please do me the favor and move any further M.-bashing off-list, would you? It turns my stomach.
P.P.S.: If you plan to ban me, too, please don't tell me what is going to be said about *me* afterwards, either."

Let's see what happens next.

Well, I must admit I probably don't get the nuances of this as I'm not au fait with the show, but expecting any area of fandom not to be infested with "annoying and demanding brats" is like expecting a garden not to be infested with ants; they happen, and we have to live with them somehow. Besides, just from the examples you give, I would suggest that vocabulary may be the least of this person's challenges.

It's neither elegant nor appropriate for people with better education/comprehension to try to slam down someone who lacks their advantages. Yes, I'm sure this person is annoying, but complaining about it just makes one look like a total horse's ass - and worse, immature into the the bargain. The grown-up option is to try to rise above it and not, under any circumstances, to trash the 'annoyance' in a public forum.

In other words, IAWTC!

So true! Or, how you said (and made me look up in an urban dictionary *g*), IAWTC!

and not, under any circumstances, to trash the 'annoyance' in a public forum

That's what private e-mails off-list are for. This whole mess felt like a couple of schoolyard bullies cornerning a nerd while the supervising teacher kept watching dispassionately.

Wow. Sometimes I'm glad I keep on the fringe of fandom. Banning the first person was such a bad and unfair move.

I hope it does end well for you.

Well, it more or less did - I'm still on the list. *g*

And I wasn't hit with the virtual equivalent of rotten tomatoes. Still, no apologies to the first person were forthcoming.

I'm very curious to see how this turns out. *grrrr's at people*

I've posted a (far too detailed *g*) summary of the following event here.

Fandom. :::shakes head:::
