I read the article in the "TV Highlights" today that deals with the remake of "Battlestar Galactica" and was less than thrilled when I saw the pictures since they awfully much reminded me of "Starship Troopers", "Space: Above and Beyond" and "Stargate SG1". Just the uniforms alone and the US-Marine look of the protagonists made me blink in consternation.
The worst was the content of the article, though, saying that the producers had deliberatedly changed the former 'Egyptian' look of the helmets, uniforms etc to one a lot more 'modern". Hah. "Modern" my ass. There are a few stories at By Your Command that wonderfully extrapolated that premise and enriched what we fans of old already knew of the Colonies' Kobolian background (look especially for "Anna" in the author section) and its ties to ancient civilisations on Earth.
Is this 'Re-Imagining' supposed to turn into an advert for the US forces? Why have all characters English names in addition to their 'original' callsigns (which used to be the old series' characters' names)? I haven't seen a trailer, script i.e. and therefore just would like to direct you to Battlestar Galactica script remake review (at BattlestarGalactica.com, Richard Hatch's site) in which the reviewer proves to be far more eloquent and objective than I could ever hope to be. Just the confirmation of what I'd already heard -- Starbuck and Boomer are now women -- turned my stomach and made me sputter in outrage. Of course, you can also check out Battlestar Galactica for a different view; after all, SciFi has to praise its own series.
Oh, and the new 'Apollo' is ugly. *eg*

Sorry it took me so long to respond... I tend to get more and more horrible in that. *eg*
You read all that animated discussions on [serge] and [Asylum], too, didn't you? The whole guessing game - is it CKR or isn't it? I was delighted, too, upon hearing that he actually has a role in the pilot, and yes, I have to admit that's one of the reasons I'll actually watch this travesty (that, and the fact that I want to know what I'm going to bitch about *g*). But then... human-looking Cylons?! What is this... Deep Space Nine where in... what was it? Season 7? everyone was paranoid in the extreme because they'd learnt that the Founders had managed to send some spies to Earth who were now hiding, undetected, amoung the general populace? Gah.
(Ok, I don't want any changes to the content of the original series. I admit that. I'll shut up now.)
And I'll go add you to my friends now, too. :-)
Actually, I was the one who started that CKR discussion. I was the first one on one of those lists to go, "Was that CKR in that BG promo?" First time I ever started one of those 'is it him or isn't it' discussion.
It was quite fun to play that guessing game. I so thought it was him from the start. Stupid Sci-Fi channel would just miscredit him. At least we pointed it out to them and they corrected. Heh!
He's about the only reason I'll be watching it too. I vaguely remember the show from when I was a kid. I wouldn't even call myself a fan and I'm annoyed that Starbuck is going to be a girl. The human cyclons thing? That's just too weird. It was supposed to be like the war between man and machines. Now what is it? Too weird.
I also heard that Callum is going to be in the next Blade movie. I would have watched that anyway, I like those movies. Him being in it just gives me an extra reason to watch and squeal in joy over it. The thought of Callum playing a vamps makes me a little giddy.
Glad you were able to get back to me. Thanks for friending me back. I've started up my rec pages too. In LJ form. I got an account over at greatestjournal.com, thought I'd give that a try. The old pages are staying up (I'll fix the broken links eventually), but the new one is the one that will get new recs. If you want to check it out it's at Slash Slut's Recs.
I can only agree with you on the 'weird' part. I don't get why SciFi absolutely has to 're-imagine' the series anyway; why not simply make a spin-off; why not pick up after the series' end (ignoring that dreadful sequel) and let them continue on their journey to Earth?
I just wish we'd finally get a series/movie in which CKR is the star, not simply a supporting character. *sigh*
Thanks for the link to your new journal, but I must say I'll be sorry to see your homepage fall into oblivion; it is so nicely structured it would be far easier to find new recs there than having to skim through all the messages in your new journal.
But don't let me talk you out of it; have fun with your new site! :-)
I don't know why they had to 're-imagine' it either. I'm seen some of the eps of that sequel on the Sci-Fi channel. God, that was awful. Made no sense. I had no idea what was up with all those damn kids. They could have just made a plain old re-make or sequel. Guess, they wanted to make it their own. Or something.
I liked the old rec pages too. I'm going to keep them up. It was such a chore updating them. I didn't like to update if I just had 4 or 5 recs. I wanted there to be a good chunk of them on several pages. So that took time to gather them and then I'd write them up later. The LJ form is easier.I find a fic and I can rec it right then. I don't feel the need to have a whole gaggle of them before I upload them.
Plus, I can structure them using the memories function. To make it easier for people to find what they are looking for. After I get enough to actually do that. So I can still sort them by fandom and stuff that way.
